🎉 AFTER THE HOLIDAYS…

😔 In France, once the holidays are over, there’s a certain emptiness…
January feels cold and long, and even the prospect of seasonal sales doesn’t spark much interest anymore.
Traditions like the “Quinzaine du Blanc,” introduced by department stores in the 19th century, are now overshadowed by modern “Black Friday” events, private sales, and regular promotions.

📅 So, we turn to the calendar, looking for public holidays to plan long weekends. Good news: this year, the outlook is promising!
People start organizing weekend getaways, family reunions, or time with friends. Summer vacation planning begins as well, all while trying to stick to New Year’s resolutions… at least for a few weeks!

🎓 For high school students preparing for life after graduation, this season can be stressful. Choosing programs, gathering information, and attending fairs—it’s a lot to handle. Let’s think of them and support them during this crucial time.

🌸 Thankfully, the days gradually grow longer, and spring starts making its way into our lives. This gentle transition brings warmth and optimism, helping us kick off the year on the right foot.

🎭 THE 150TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE PARIS OPERA

✨ On June 5, 1875, the Paris Opera was officially inaugurated in the presence of President Mac-Mahon and a distinguished European audience.

History, however, recalls a surprising anecdote: the architect, Charles Garnier, was not invited due to disorganized administration. To attend the event, he had to purchase his own seat in a box!
Nevertheless, his honor was restored as he received a standing ovation while descending the grand staircase—the masterpiece of a building celebrated for its coherence and rationality.

🏛️Following a competition that attracted 171 projects, the young Charles Garnier, aged 35 and with no major works to his name, emerged victorious. He defeated renowned figures like Eugène Viollet-le-Duc, who was considered the frontrunner.

👑 Emperor Napoleon III, absent at the inauguration (having passed away two years earlier), had commissioned the construction of this opera as part of his grand urban development plan for Paris. The building was designed as the crowning jewel of a majestic perspective stretching from the Louvre Palace.

Blending classical, baroque, and Renaissance influences, it took nearly fifteen years to complete this architectural masterpiece.

🎉 In 2025, the Paris National Opera Garnier will celebrate its 150th anniversary with a series of exceptional events. It’s a unique opportunity to (re)discover this mythical venue, a true gem of French history and culture.

🎭 THE TRADITION OF THE KING CAKE

🎉 “Drawing the Kings” is a tradition celebrated on January 6, the day of Epiphany, by sharing a galette that hides a small charm (the “fève”). Whoever finds it becomes King or Queen for the day and chooses their counterpart.

📜 This tradition dates back to the Roman Saturnalia. During the winter solstice, masters and slaves shared the same table. The person who found the fève in their slice of the round, golden cake, symbolizing the sun, was crowned King of the festivities, regardless of their status.

⛪ The tradition was later adopted by Christians as a religious celebration, honoring the Magi’s homage to the Infant Jesus.

🥐 Over the centuries, the custom has endured, and recipes have evolved with regional variations: in the north, flaky puff pastry filled with almond cream; in the south, a brioche crown flavored with orange blossom and adorned with candied fruits.

👑 The fève, originally a symbol of spring’s awaited return, was replaced in the 18th century by tiny porcelain figurines.

🍽️ Today, pastry chefs compete to create the most decadent galettes, often including unique fèves that delight fabophiles (fève collectors)!

❓ Did you know that the galettes served at the Élysée Palace don’t include fèves? A French president can’t risk wearing a crown!
