🗼 Integration in France

Key Steps and Mandatory Training for New Arrivals

📂 Did you know that foreigners arriving in France must follow a republican integration process with the OFII?

📃 This process begins with a half-day welcome visit to the OFII, during which the applicant signs the republican integration contract.

📄 During this visit, the applicant undergoes an individual interview to assess their needs, as well as a written and oral language test to determine their level of French.

📅 Next, there is a mandatory 4-day civic education training aimed at helping the applicant understand the principles and values of France, as well as the practical functioning of French society.

🕝 If the French language level assessed during the welcome visit is below level A1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR), the applicant must also undergo language training ranging from 100 to 600 hours. This training is compulsory, but it may be terminated if the applicant reaches level A1 before the prescribed hours are completed.

🤝 Whether you are arriving in France soon or are already here, we understand that dealing with French administration can be stressful. We are here to help you better understand the mandatory and recommended procedures.

💖 Getting to know French traditions: May 1st – Lily of the valley

⚜ Lily of the valley has been associated with the arrival of spring since ancient times.

👑 On May 1st, 1560, King Charles IX was reportedly given a few sprigs during a visit to Dauphiné. Finding the gesture delicate, he in turn offered these fragrant bells to the ladies of his court the following year. While this story is hard to verify, the custom has endured.

💐 In the revolutionary calendar, lily of the valley is linked to April 26th, the “Republican Day,” while the red wild rose is associated with May 1st. Thus, French workers chose this flower in reference to the red triangle worn by American unionists during their May 1st, 1886 parade.

💮 On May 1st, 1895, the singer Mayol wore a sprig of lily of the valley on his lapel, believing it brought him luck, and he made it his emblem. Lily of the valley was also brought back into fashion by top fashion designers who offered sprigs to their employees and clients. Christian Dior made it his favorite flower.

🌺 However, it was in 1941, under Marshal Pétain, that lily of the valley was officially associated with the “Labor and Social Concord Day,” as the red wild rose was deemed too leftist… Let’s offer lily of the valley, let’s offer happiness!

🌆The origine of Canne’s festival

🗓 From May 14th to 25th, the 77th edition of the Cannes Film Festival will grace La Croisette.

✴ This iconic rendez-vous of the cinematic world was born in 1938 through the vision of diplomat and historian Philippe Erlanger.

🎶 Disheartened by the political pressures influencing the Venice Film Festival juries to award Nazi propaganda documentaries, Erlanger envisioned a festival free from such constraints.

💃 His idea garnered approval from the French government, and Cannes was selected from a pool of ten candidate cities. All film-producing countries were invited to select entries for competition.

⚡ However, Germany and Italy declined to participate in the inaugural edition, slated for September 1st to 20th, 1939. Sadly, on September 3rd, war was declared…

🧘‍♀️ Following the dawn of peace, Erlanger revived the festival concept. Yet, neither the state nor the city of Cannes could shoulder the organizing expenses. It was through public subscription that, on September 20th, 1946, the Cannes Film Festival was inaugurated amidst a jubilant atmosphere.

🏅 In its inaugural year, Michèle Morgan received the Grand Prix International for Best Actress for her role in Jean Delannoy’s “Symphony Pastorale.”

🍅 Open markets in France

🍒 Back in 1957, Gilbert Bécaud already celebrated the scents and joys of the markets of Provence…

🍓 Today, the stroll among stalls with enticing aromas is still cherished by the French. From Parisian avenues to village squares, markets continue to attract crowds.

☑ In recent years, media campaigns gathering votes from nearly 10 million people have been electing the most beautiful market in France.

🥇 In 2023, the market of La Réole, along the Garonne River, won the prize. The 2024 campaign is now underway!

🍑 Markets have withstood the rise of supermarkets, continually renewing themselves by adapting to consumers’ desires and needs: consuming local, organic, and short-circuit products.

👨‍🎨 Going to the market is not just about filling your basket; it’s an immersive experience engaging all your senses: you scrutinize, touch, weigh, smell, taste, and hear the merchants’ cries mingling with the chatter. You return to your favorite stalls, where you always leave with a little something extra, discover new ones, and allow yourself to be tempted… You come back tired, loaded, but somehow rejuvenated by this ritual we are not ready to give up!

🥖 The French Baguette: A Cultural Icon

🎖 Since being added to UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage list on November 30, 2022, the French baguette remains one of the foremost symbols associated with France.
It is an integral part of our daily lives, and tourists love it.

🥇 Since 1994, the Grand Prix de la Baguette de Tradition de la Ville de Paris has been awarded, with the winner becoming the official supplier to the Élysée Palace for a year.

🙋‍♀️ Baking competitions are flourishing everywhere, and for several years now, a television show has been crowning the best bakery in France, with regional press eagerly covering the results.

👨‍🍳 While tradition is upheld, recipes are becoming increasingly creative, and bakers are more attentive than ever to the origin of their flours and the quality of their sourdough starters.

👩‍🍳 Across the country, we see the emergence of neo-bakers who are committed to exceptional quality. They proudly display the origins of their flours, often from rare seeds, carefully monitor the fermentation of their sourdough, and offer exquisitely crafted flans and brioches.

👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 People line up at their favorite bakeries, exchange tips on the best spots, and the most dedicated enthusiasts don’t hesitate to traverse Paris for a taste of crusty bread with a soft crumb. Are you one of them?
