๐Ÿ—“๏ธ 2024 Legislative Elections

๐Ÿ—ผ In response to the results of the European elections, the President of the Republic decided on June 9th to give the French people the opportunity to choose their parliamentary future by dissolving the National Assembly. This exclusive power of the President serves to resolve ongoing or anticipated crises or institutional deadlocks. This is the sixth dissolution since the start of the Fifth Republic.

โ™ ๏ธ In France, the National Assembly shares legislative power with the Senate. Together, these two bodies form the Parliament, but the National Assembly wields greater authority. It oversees government actions and can hold the government accountable. In case of a disagreement with the Senate, the Government can grant the National Assembly the “final say” in the legislative process (excluding constitutional laws and organic laws concerning the Senate). Additionally, the Constitution gives the National Assembly a more prominent role in reviewing the finance bill and the social security financing bill.

โ‰๏ธ The 577 deputies are elected by direct universal suffrage for a five-year term, and the President must select the Prime Minister from the political group that wins the legislative elections.

๐Ÿ’โ€โ™€๏ธ The significance of this election explains why it is currently a dominant topic in France.
